 HUDNALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

 ANTI-BULLYING POLICY

HUDNALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IS COMMITTED TO PROTECTING ITS STUDENTS, EMPLOYEES, AND PARENTS FROM BULLYING, HARASSMENT, OR DISCRIMINATION FOR ANY REASON AND OF ANY TYPE.  WE BELIEVE THAT ALL STUDENTS AND EMPLOYEES ARE ENTITLED TO A SAFE, EQUITABLE, AND HARASSMENT-FREE SCHOOL EXPERIENCE.  BULLYING, HARASSMENT, OR DISCRIMINIATION WILL NOT BE TOLERATED AND SHALL BE JUST CAUSE FOR DISCIPLINARY ACTION.

HUDNALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRIDES ITSELF IN BUILDING A CULTURE OF HEALTH, WELLNESS, SAFETY, AND RESPECT AND EXCELLENCE.

BULLYING IS UNFAIR AND ONE-SIDED.  IT HAPPENS WHEN SOMEONE KEEPS HURTING, FRIGHTENING, THREATENING, OR LEAVING SOMEONE OUT ON PURPOSE.  THIS CAN OCCUR IN PERSON OR ON-LINE

Examples of bullying include:

  • Leaving someone out on purpose or trying to get other students not to play with someone.
  • Spreading rumors about someone.
  • Unwanted teasing
  • Using put-downs, such as insulting someone’s race, religion or family or making fun of someone because they are a boy or a girl.
  • Ganging up on someone.
  • Stealing or damaging another person’s things.
  • Threatening others
  • Hurting someone physically by hitting, kicking, tripping, pushing, etc.
  • Cyber bullying.

Students at Hudnall will do the following to prevent bullying:

  • Treat each other with courtesy and respect.
  • Refuse to bully others
  • Refuse to let others be bullied.
  • Refuse to watch, laugh, or join in when someone is being bullied.
  • Try to include everyone in play, especially those students who are often left out.
  • Report all bullying to an adult.

The Staff at Hudnall Elementary will do the following to prevent bullying and to help children feel safe at school:

  • Closely supervise students in all areas of the school and playground.
  • Watch for signs of bullying and stop it when it happens.
  • Respond quickly and sensitively to bullying reports by doing the following:  be empathetic to their concerns-affirm their feelings; ask them what happened and, if possible, provide suggestions as to what to do if the bullying occurs again/direct student to complete bullying incident form.
  • Take seriously families’ concerns about bullying.
  • Look into all reported bullying incidents.
  • Assign consequences for bullying based on the school discipline policy.
  • PROVIDE AN IMMEDIATE CONSEQUENCE FOR RETALIATION AGAINST STUDENTS WHO REPORT BULLYING.

DISCIPLINARY ACTION

Since bystander support of harassment or bullying can support these behaviors, our school will prohibit both active and passive support for acts of harassment or bullying.  The Hudnall staff should encourage students to support students who walk away from these acts when they see them, constructively attend to stop them, or report them to the designated authority.

Our staff will use disciplinary situations as opportunities for helping students to learn to assume responsibility and consequences of their behavior.

If and when a bullying incident occurs, students will report the incident to their teacher or directly to the principal/administrative designee.  The student will pick up a bullying referral form from the office.  After completing the referral, the students will return the completed form to the office, which will initiate investigation of the incident by the principal/administrative designee.
