W. Claude Elementary School received the state’s highest honor when it was named a California Distinguished School in 2000. To this day, Hudnall continues to carry on the tradition of high academic achievement for all students. In 2005, students earned an Academic Performance Index score of 763—just shy of 800 points, which is considered to be exceptional. Hudnall ranks 10 out of 10 among similar schools statewide.
Hudnall Elementary School offers a wide range of programs and activities for students. Computer classes are taught by a certified computer teacher so that students become fluent in technology. The Jump Start preschool program helps prepare young children with reading skills for success in kindergarten, where the technology-based Waterford Early Reading Program is used to enhance their reading instruction. Students can take part in Student Council, Peer Mediators, Safety Patrol, after-school tutoring, after-school enrichment programs, Fun Club, and Family Literacy.
Hudnall parents and community members support the school as part of advisory committees and the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). For families who are learning English, there is English tutoring, Latino Literacy, and an English Learners advisory committee. In fact, Hudnall staff does such an outstanding job educating English learners that the California Department of Education has asked the school to take part in a study on the best ways to educate non-English speakers.
In the future, Hudnall students can look forward to the construction of a brand new 2-story, 20-classroom building, slated to begin in 2006 as a part of the district’s Measure K program.
